Tuning the brain for performing artists…
We have discovered allot about how wonderfully adaptable our brain (Central Nervous System) is and how it is capable it is a renormalizing itself from our past. When we are children, we all have traumatic moments that ‘set’ our brain on a certain trajectory and that will cause us to have to protect ourselves against outside threats. SO essentially, we have all taken in fear and that blocked fear prevents us, at times, from being ourselves and natural and relaxed. SInce our brain is carrying the memory of this early childhood trauma/fear, and since we know that whatever we experience will become how our nervous system develops, we find ourselves behaving in ways that are quite baffling at times. Thoughts that won’t leave our mind, the need to ingest certain foods, the inability to be direct with others, hyperactivity and many more human behaviors.
So what has this to do with singing you may well ask?
It has all to do with it! Singing is merely being human in an elongated way. But we need a free body and psyche in order to allow our natural voice to come through. When our brain is carrying the memories of past fears, it makes it difficult to open up in front of others and fly freely, as it were.
Brain Training…
So sometimes, while we are learning to sing, I actually hook the student up to an EEG Monitor and do real time brain training with them. This provides their brain with direct information any time it begins to be dysfunctional or what is called producing turbulence. Turbulence is over expenditure of energy and and we know one thing; our brain has evolved to be very energy efficient. So we can help the brain re-set it’s own behavior and become more relaxed in the face of stress and fear. I have some great results with clients over the 5 years that I have used this approach and I love using it with singers because it speeds there progress greatly.
See my www.OptimalPerformanceTraining.com website for more information on this approach.
